Is there anything better than free gasoline? Not if you're one of the Iowans who will soon fill up your vehicle's gas tank for free.

To me, getting the best gasoline price is almost like winning a game. While it seems most of the time prices are just a few cents apart, a well-timed visit to another part of the city could end up with significant savings. This Saturday, hundreds of people won't feel the pain at the pump... they'll be filling up for free. They're also going to get something free for the kids.

Your good fortune might leave you taking a photo at the pump.

Last January, Rob Johnson, a pastor and community activist, celebrated his 34th birthday with a gift to the community of Des Moines. He teamed up with several businesses to give away $3,000 at a Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh on SE 14th Street in Des Moines.

The event, which started at 10 a.m. on Johnson's birthday (Friday, January 21) resulted in vehicles getting in line for free gasoline as early as 4 a.m., according to WHO-13.

This year, for Johnson's 35th birthday, he's going even bigger. Five times as big with $15,000 in free gasoline, thanks to the Des Moines Urban Experience. Johnson learned some things from year one. The most important thing is to stay light on details... at least for now.

In an effort to avoid a gigantic line (at least not until closer to when the event begins), Johnson isn't going to announce where the free gasoline is being given away until 9 a.m. this Saturday morning, January 21. That's an hour before the free gas giveaway begins. Since the giveaway is presented by Kum & Go, it's likely it will happen at one of their stores. Good luck trying to guess which one, though. There are eight Kum & Go locations in the city of Des Moines.

In addition to free gasoline, there will be volunteers pumping the gasoline and a musical guest. It sounds like the best birthday party ever, where the guests get the gifts. Yes, there's more than free gasoline.

I say gifts because WHO-13 reports that people who fill up will also get a free children's book, thanks to the Des Moines Public Library.

If you know anybody in the Des Moines area, pass this story along to them and tell them to check the Des Moines Urban Experience Facebook page Saturday at 9 a.m. to find out where the free gasoline will be pumped.

Congratulations to Rob Johnson and everyone involved. They obviously realize the best gift is giving to others.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
