Can New Laws Help Iowa Families Save Money?
Inflation continues to go up. On-again, and off-again tariffs are wreaking havoc on the markets and consumer confidence. What is the average person supposed to do to save a little money at the store? Iowa lawmakers are looking to step in with a proposed bill that will save Iowans money. I'm not so sure it will be enough.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that with just one month to go in the legislative session, Iowa lawmakers are unveiling a series of bills aimed at saving you money. One such bill would exempt household products like toilet paper and laundry detergent from the state sales tax of 6 percent. The bill has received bipartisan support.
One lawmaker expressed his surprise that these items weren't already exempt from the state sales tax according to the Gazette. He went on to say that if passed, the bill would ease the burden on Iowa families. Now, don't get me wrong. Any time I can save money is a good thing. But saving 6% on certain items isn't going to lift much of a burden on my family or any other in Iowa as prices on everything continue to soar.
Other efforts include raising tax credits for child care and adoption. But the Gazette reports that Iowa Democrats don't believe these recent bills go far enough. They have proposed a minimum wage increase to $15 and expanding unemployment insurance to 26 weeks. Two things that don't stand a chance in the Republican-controlled Iowa legislature.
What will you spend your 6% savings on?
