Safety Changes Called for After Cyclist Dies on High Trestle Trail
The High Trestle Trail is one of the most popular recreation spots in Iowa. The 25-mile paved trail runs between Ankeny and Woodward, connecting five towns and four counties. It is most famous for the beautiful bridge that extends over the Des Moines River and features bright lights at night. But there is one spot on the trail that many riders are fearful of.
Intersection on the High Trestle Trail is Dangerous for Cyclists
The intersection in question is just outside of Crocker, Iowa, where the High Trestle Trail crosses Northwest 44th Street. The trail crosses a roadway where the speed limit is 55 miles per hour, and cars and trucks can surprise someone on a bicycle.
Iowa Cyclist Killed at Dangerous Intersection
The Des Moines Register reports that 44-year-old cyclist Courtney Petersen was riding her recumbent bicycle on the trail on October 9th when she attempted to cross at Northwest 44th Street. She was hit and killed by a cement truck. Petersen was a Marine Corps sergeant and a paralyzed veteran. She competed in marathons all over the world. The Register reports that she and her husband had moved to Ankeny to be close to the High Trestle Trail.
Cycling Community Asks for Safety Changes
The Register reports that shortly after the accident, Petersen's sister in law started a petition asking local officials to make safety changes at the trail's intersection with Northwest 44th Street. The executive director for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition told the Register that leveling mounds in the roadway and adding flashing lights would improve safety at the intersection.
The Register reports that Petersen's death was the fourth cycling-related fatality in Iowa this year.
