When you hear of a school district changing its dress code mid-year, you tell yourself that it must be getting stricter. Students simply aren't obeying the rules. But in one Eastern Iowa School District, it is just the opposite.

KWWL reports that students in the Waterloo School District will have more options and flexibility when it comes to what they wear to school next year. The Waterloo School Board voted on Monday night 5 to 1 in favor of changing the school dress code policy. The school district had received 4500 survey responses from the Cedar Valley community to get their thoughts on the student dress code. In the end, school officials say the decision to make changes was made in the best interest of students and families.

Examples of new clothing that will now be accepted include,

  • Crocs
  • Hoodies with the hood down
  • Pants of any solid color
  • Waterloo Schools apparel
  • Cargo pants

Clothing items that are still NOT allowed include,

  • Headgear, hats, and hoods
  • Sunglasses
  • Sagging pants
  • Clothing with holes in them
  • Sleepwear

KWWL reports that any issues that arise with the new dress code policy could result in a parent meeting being held. If the student refuses to comply they will be retained at an in-school suspension until they agree to the dress code.

As far as dress codes are concerned, this one sounds fairly easy to adhere to. I get that students want to express themselves through the clothing that they wear. This sounds like the guidelines will provide enough flexibility for students to do just that. The new dress code will go into effect when student return from winter break.
