You can't win if you don't play. But a lot of people are playing and not winning, leading to an estimated jackpot of $1 billion for Monday night's Powerball drawing.

No one matched all six numbers Saturday night when the big prize sat at $825 million. This creates an opportunity for someone to pick up the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history, according to KIMT, who says the biggest winner ever was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won by three ticketholders in 2016.

Although nobody won the Saturday night drawing, several people came close. KIMT says one Florida ticket-holder matched all five white balls in Saturday's drawing and increased the prize to $2 million by including the game’s “Power Play” feature. Six tickets won a $1 million prize by matching five white balls, including two in California, two in Michigan, one in Maryland, and one in Texas.

There were also seventeen winners of $100,000 each and 80 winners of $50,000.

According to CNN,

“The Powerball jackpot was last hit on August 3, when a ticket in Pennsylvania matched all five white balls and the red Powerball to win a $206.9 million jackpot,” Powerball said in a statement. “Since then, there have been 37 drawings in a row with no grand prize winner. The Monday night drawing will be the 38th draw in the jackpot run.”

Iowans have had some pretty good luck with the various games of the Iowa lottery recently, including earlier this month when a Mapleton man won $1 million, a much-needed boost after a year of struggle for Darryl Ingram, a farmer who had faced a heart attack and an additional health scare in 2022.

The last time the world was playing for this kind of money was last July when the Mega Millions eventually had an Illinois ticket win $1.337 billion--which, according to CNN was only the second biggest ever in that game.

Meanwhile, it's been nearly six months since anyone hit all six numbers in the Powerball drawing, but this Monday night could definitely change someone's luck.  Here's hoping it's you!
