A trip to the hospital was anything but routine for an ambulance carrying a patient Friday afternoon.

First, the ambulance gets a flat tire. Then, while disabled, it is struck by a passing pick-up on Interstate 380 in Black Hawk County.

Sheriff's officials said a Waterloo man suffered minor injuries in the accident, which occurred around 3:30 PM near mile marker 58 between the Jesup and La Porte City interchanges in southeastern Black Hawk County.

Authorities said a University of Iowa ambulance was parked on the median shoulder with a flat tire when it was struck from behind by a passing pick-up, driven by Robert Livingston of Waterloo. Livingston's vehicle then collided with a camper being towed in the outside lane.

According to sheriff's officials, the ambulance was carrying a patient at the time of the crash. Deputies said another ambulance was called to transport the patient to a Waterloo hospital.

Authorities said Livingston suffered a minor injury and was treated by paramedics at the scene. The driver of the ambulance and the vehicle pulling the camper were not hurt.
