Waterloo police are mourning the death of a fellow officer.

According to Waterloo Safety Services Director Dan Trelka, officer Adam Liddle, 35, died of what he termed “unknown medical trauma” during a morning workout on Thursday (Oct. 29, 2015).

Liddle has been a member of the Waterloo police force for three years. He's a former Black Hawk County sheriff's deputy who also served as a volunteer firefighter in Hudson.

Trelka said Liddle was off-duty Thursday at the time of his death, but he's reviewing criteria to determine if Liddle's death could be considered a line-of-duty incident under the federal Hometown Heroes Act passed by Congress in 2003. In general terms, the measure states that if a public safety officer (police, fire, paramedic) dies as the “direct and proximate result of a heart attack or stroke” while on duty, or within 24 hours of having been on duty, that death COULD be treated as a line-of-duty death.

According to Trelka, Liddle was a second-shift officer. The last shift he worked was from 3 to 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Liddle is survived by his wife and 10-year-old son.
