WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Two kayakers were rescued from the steep sides and swift water of Black Hawk Creek in Waterloo.

Larry and Barb Lamfers put their kayaks into the creek Thursday afternoon but soon floated into a tree.

Larry Lamfers was pushed against the tree, and the current pulled away his kayak. He reached the shore but couldn't climb up a steep bank. His wife stayed upright but became trapped by the current.

After an hour, the couple called 911 and officials triangulated their approximate position.

Firefighters launched a boat in the Cedar River but couldn't travel up the creek. Another crew managed to paddle downstream.

Firefighters pulled Larry Lamfers up the bank and used a rope to pull Barb Lamfers' kayak to the opposite shore.
