City officials in Waterloo have designated a site where residents and business owners can dispose of flood-damaged items free of charge.

The Public Works Sanitation Department has placed several dumpsters at the National Cattle Congress fairgrounds (257 Ansborough Ave, just off U.S. Highway 218) for anyone who needs to get rid of items that were damaged the flood. The site is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily through Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016. Residents will be required to give their name and address when they dispose of the items.

In Cedar Falls, curb-side debris pick-up begins on Saturday (Oct. 1). Flood debris can also be taken to the Transfer Station at no charge to the city's residents. The Transfer Station will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Recycling Station remains closed.

According to Waterloo city officials, clean sandbags that have not been used can be dropped off at 1314 Black Hawk St. in the fenced-in area. All other sandbags will need to be disposed of at the Black Hawk County landfill or can be placed curbside.

Outside Waterloo, Black Hawk County has designed three sites where sandbags provided to rural residents can be dropped-off. Those locations are: the Moose Lodge, off U.S. Highway 218, in Washburn, the city park in Finchford, and the Secondary Roads Maintenance Shed on Cedar Street in La Porte City.

Several rural roads in Black Hawk County remain closed because of flooding. Among them are two county highways, D38 (or E. Washburn Road) on the west edge of Gilbertville and D48 (or Brandon Road) northeast of La Porte City.

For a list of road closures in Black Hawk County, see the county's website at www.co.black-hawk.ia.us.
