Wait! How Much Money Did Iowans Lose Thanks To Scammers!?!

In this day and age, it seems like you can encounter some sort of scam anywhere and everywhere.

Remember the good old days when all you had to worry about was some Serbian prince who needed cash?

I've almost fallen for a scam in my time, but I've never been to the point where I gave out information or money to anyone.

Unfortunately, that's not the case for countless Iowans who have lost some major dough after getting frauded.

Based off of 12,999 reports made to the Federal Trade Commission, officials were able to determine just how much money the entire state of Iowa lost to fraud.

The Hawkeye State lost a total of $42.6 million in 2023.

So, for every 100,000 residents, there was about $1.3 million lost.

I did some math...

It turns out that one of the most expensive cars right now is a Ferrari SF90 Spider. According to reports, the retail price for this vehicle is $575,445.

If you used all of the money that Iowans were scammed out of in just one year, you could be around eighty-six of these cars.

Most Common Scams That Iowans Fall For

This was based off of data from the Federal Trade Commission and QRFY. Iowa is considered the 40th most defrauded state in the country relative to the state's population.

"As scammers continue to employ ever more inventive tactics to get hold of your finances, it's possible for people of any age to fall victim to fraud," a spokesperson for QRFY said.
