A house fire killed two people and injured two others in Waterloo Sunday morning (April 22, 2018).

Firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze at 536 Dawson St. around 6:30 AM. Officials at the scene said five people were inside the two-story home when the fire broke out.

“We have an adult female and a juvenile male that were deceased on the scene of this fire,” Waterloo Fire Rescue Chief Pat Treloar confirmed. “Our understanding is that there were three people in the home that were able to get out – an adult male, an adult female and another juvenile. Of those three that were able to get out of the fire, we transported two females to an area hospital.”

Treloar did not release the ages of the victims or reveal the extent of injuries.

Firefighters were still at the scene at 9AM. At that time, Treloar said the probe into what sparked the fire was just getting underway.

“The fire marshal is working the scene right now, as well as two other of our investigators, along with WPD (Waterloo Police Department),” he said. “We're doing some interviews right now out at the hospital with the two that we transported. We still have an active scene here, putting out hot spots and making sure the fire is extinguished.”

In addition to finding the cause, Treloar said investigors will also attempt to pin-point where the fire began.

“By looking at the house, it obviously started on the front side of the home,” Treloar said. “Exactly where, we're not sure.”

Treloar indicated that more information about the fire would be released Sunday afternoon.
