The sheriff of Allamakee County wants residents to know how badly they need a new jail. In doing so, a series of town hall meetings are being held in four area communities, to educate the public about a special bond election coming up next month to pay for a new facility.

The special referendum calls for a $5.1 million bond to pay for a new public safety center, which would include a new jail, sheriff's office, and dispatch. The proposed new facility would replace the 75 year old jail in Waukon, which has not met state and federal standards.

The special election is set for May 5th. The town hall meetings will be held:

Tonight (Tuesday) at Waukon Famers and Merchants Savings bank;

Wednesday at Lansing Eastern Allamakee High School;

Thursday at the Harpers Ferry Community Center;

and Friday at the Dorchester Wings Supper Club.

All meetings will begin at 7pm.
