The Oelwein Police Department is warning residents of a scam that is targeting area businesses.

Someone is calling businesses, claiming to be from Alliant Energy. The caller tells the business that their utility bill is past due, and to keep their electricity on, the victim must go to the local Dollar General store and purchase a money pack, or they would get disconnected.

The man calling has been using the name of "Mark Halloway".

According to Alliant Energy, their company never calls customers to demand an immediate payment, threatening with a cutoff.

Never send money or gift cards to someone you do not know. Always call Alliant, or the company in question, to ask about your account.

Anyone who has had a similar experience, should contact local law enforcement.
