Patrol Names Fatality Victim in Transit Accident

Authorities have now identified a man who was killed in an accident involving a transit bus.


According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened Thursday afternoon (Nov. 30) on Highway 18, near Rudd.

The transit bus, driven by 47 year old Mark Helmers of Charles City and carrying 2 passengers, was attempting to cross the highway on Glass Avenue, but did not yield to an SUV driven by 76 year old Eugene Schipper of Anamosa.

Schipper’s Jeep ended up in a ditch; he was taken to a Mason City hospital, where he died from his injuries. A passenger on the bus sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
