CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Jurors convicted a Parkersburg man of assaulting a Cedar Falls police officer, but they didn't find him guilty of a more serious charge.

Jurors found 28-year-old Zachary Lee Church guilty of assault on a peace officer, punishable by up to a year in jail. Jurors also convicted him of marijuana possession with intent to deliver and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

They declined to convict him of assault on an officer with intent to cause serious injury.

Police arrested Church on Christmas morning 2013 after officer Robert Anderson found him asleep in a parked but running car.

When Anderson told Church to sit in his patrol car, Church repeatedly punched the officer. After a warning, Anderson shot Church three times.

He'll be sentenced later.
