An open house was held over the weekend at the new Buchanan County animal shelter, located just north of Hazleton.

Dr. Shelly Reed, a board member with the Buchanan County Animal shelter, gave tours and explained how many dogs and cats the facility will be able to hold. The outside of the building was put up faster than expected, so work may now continue on the interior.

The organization still needs funds for it's completion, about $200,000; the official opening probably will be held late next year.

The shelter will serve both Buchanan and Fayette Counties, and Dr. Reed explains there was a great need for it. This is a no-kill facility, which has the capacity for 40 dogs and 40 cats, along with an outdoor walking trail and separate quarantine building, if needed.

The open house, which included a silent auction and tours, was held over the weekend, and quite a few people stopped to take a look, make a donation, volunteer their time, and make a bid on prizes.
