One man died in a grain bin mishap in Waterloo on Monday (Aug. 7, 2017).

Rescuers were called to East Central Iowa (ECI) Cooperative, 1750 Broadway St., around 11:30 a.m. on the report of a worker buried up to his waist in grain inside a bin. Upon arrival, firefighters went to work cutting holes in the bin to drain it of soybeans. They worked for about two hours trying to free the man, but their rescue efforts failed.

The man's body was pulled from the bin shortly after 1:30 p.m.

ECI General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Carlholm confirmed one worker died in the accident.

"We don't have a lot of answers right now," Carlholm said at the scene, shortly after the victim was taken away in an ambulance. "All of us at ECI are determined to find out what happened, but our priority right now is with his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Carlholm did not know how many workers were inside the bin at the time of the accident.

An investigation is underway.
