The Oelwein city council has a new member.

At last night's regular meeting, the council appointed Ted Malget to represent Ward one, a post that had been held by Peggy Sherrets, who resigned to accept the mayor's position.

The "musical chairs" began in August, when then-mayor Jason Manus, resigned after being arrested for several counts of sexual abuse, involving two young girls.

Sherrets, the mayor pro-tem at that point, was appointed to the post; Malget was also appointed to fill Sherrets' seat. However, residents signed a petition, calling for a special election. Sherrets won the four-way race earlier this month.

After officially resigning her council seat 2 weeks ago, Sherrets was then given the oath of office for mayor. The council then decided to make an appointment to the vacant council seat.

Malget's appointment was approved unanimously by the council.

Meanwhile, Jason Manus' sexual abuse trial was pushed back to April 22nd.
