MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Mason City man who held police at bay for hours has been convicted of domestic abuse.

Fifty-four-year-old Philip Geilenfeld is scheduled to be sentenced on March 9. Geilenfeld originally was charged with a felony, but he made a deal with prosecutors, who lowered the charge to a misdemeanor in exchange for his guilty plea.

The standoff began soon after officers responded to 911 calls shortly before 5 p.m. on Feb. 14. The victim left the scene at a Mason City home and was treated for her injuries.

Police say Geilenfeld refused to leave the home. Officers eventually broke out windows and took Geilenfeld into custody around 9:30 p.m.
