The U.S. District Court of Appeals upheld an earlier decision to deny an appeal to stop the enforcement of Country-of-Origin-Labeling yesterday by a nine-to-two majority. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says the court’s decision is another victory for NFU and other organizations in their long battle to uphold the enforcement of the COOL regulation as modified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Johnson says the court ruled the government may require factual, uncontroversial information to be included on a label. He says consumers want to know basic information about where their meat comes from - and U.S. livestock producers are proud of what they produce and are happy to give consumers that information. COOL will significantly improve the information available to consumers by reducing confusion about the origins of meat products - according to Johnson - and provide producers the opportunity to differentiate their products. With this being the third time COOL has won in court - Johnson says there is no need for the case to proceed.
