NE Iowan Pleads to Social Security Fraud Charge

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Northeast Iowa woman who authorities say defrauded Social Security for about 11 years has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.

Federal prosecutors say 49-year-old Angela Carmichael, of Aplington, last week was convicted of Supplemental Society Security Income benefits fraud. A sentencing date hasn't been set. Carmichael faces up to five years in prison.

In a plea agreement, Carmichael admitted that, between June 2003 and June 2014, she didn't tell the Social Security Administration that she was living with her husband. Doing so would have jeopardized her collection of Supplemental Security Income benefits.

Officials say Carmichael received more than $68,000 in benefits to which she was not entitled.
