The Bremer County sheriff reports that deputies were sent to a home in rural Waverly Tuesday afternoon, on the report from a mental health professional, that a client was threatening suicide.

When officers arrived, they found the male subject outside in his yard; he pulled out a knife and held it to his throat, making threats to harm himself. He refused officers' requests to drop the knife, then tried to run away, while still holding the knife to his throat.

The man ran into a nearby bean field, tripped and fell down; one of the pursuing deputies also fell, but was able to quickly recover.

The subject was still holding the knife to his neck, when the deputy fired a Taser, striking the man in the hand and torso, rendering him incapacitated.

The man, whose name is not being released, dropped the knife, and was taken into custody without any other incident. He was taken to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation; he did sustain minor injuries from the knife.

No charges have been filed.
