Decorah Police were called to an unusual situation Sunday (July 29) when a driver mistakenly drove her vehicle down a mountain bike trail.

A motorist apparently thought that a bike trail was part of the roadway, and she drove a considerable distance before her vehicle slid off the trail and became stuck.

According to police, the driver, whose name was not released, mistook one of the city's mountain bike trails, as a regular roadway.

The motorist entered the trail near Dunning Springs, and made it three-fourths of the way to the 5th Street bridge.

She would have made it just fine, but the trail narrowed and the vehicle got too close to the Upper Iowa River.

No one was injured; there was $6,000 damage to the vehicle, which was safely removed.

Decorah Police were assisted by the Winneshiek County Sheriff, Decorah Fire Department, and Don's Towing Service.
