A school lockdown in Cedar Rapids is now over, however a teenage boy is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries in a suicide attempt.

Police were called to Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, at about 8am today (Friday, Sept. 9) on the report of a shooting.

The school building was quickly put on lockdown, until officials could assess the situation.

When authorities arrived, they found a 15 year old male student behind the school auditorium, suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The teen, whose name was not released, was taken to an area hospital with a life-threatening wound. No condition report was available.

Students were held inside the school buildings until the scene could be secured; the lockdown was terminated a short time later.

Parents were informed, and allowed to pick up their child early if they wanted. Otherwise, school will contiue on an adjusted schedule.

Counselors are on hand at Jefferson High in Cedar Rapids for students and staff.
