A Northeast Iowa hospital will be offering area women the latest breast cancer screening technology, with the upgrade to 3D Mammography.

Mercy Hospital in Oelwein will be upgrading to Tomosynthesis, during the first week in October.

The new technology will provide a faster diagnosis, with more detailed information available to patients and radiologists. It will also be much closer to home, serving women in Fayette County and the surrounding area.

The Genius 3D Mammography equipment has been proven to find the more invasive cancers, and reduces the chance that a patient would have to be called back to the hospital for more testing.

This new 3D technology is being made possible by a $250,000 gift from the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Women who don't have a history of breast cancer in their family, are encouraged to have mammograms every year, starting at the age of 40.
