Authorities are warning Northeast Iowa residents of a telephone scam.

According to sources, including the Oelwein Chamber and Area Development, they have been notified by Oelwein citizens, who have reported getting phone calls from someone who is claiming they are from the IRS.

The IRS never contacts anyone by phone; their correspondence method is through the U.S. Mail service.

Authorities warn residents to never give out personal information over the phone, including social security, credit card, and bank account numbers.

If anyone receives such a phone call, just hang up, or call your local police department.
