Emergency road work will force some temporary closures of Iowa Highway 58 in Cedar Falls Tuesday evening (May 22, 2018).

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT), workers need to repair a median barrier that was damaged over the weekend. The project will require intermittent road closures on Iowa 58 on the north side of Viking Road from 9 PM to midnight.

IDOT officials said traffic on Iowa 58 will be directed to go either east or west on Viking Road. A four-way stop will be in place, along with law enforcement and flaggers directing traffic.

Digital message signs will also be set up to alert oncoming motorists of the closure in advance.

The damaged median barrier being fixed is located in a construction zone. Workers are currently in the process of building a $32.1 million interchange at Iowa 58 and Viking Road, an intersection that's considered to be one of the most-dangerous in the Cedar Valley. When complete, the interchange is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce the statistically high number of accidents that have occurred there in recent years.

To avoid possible congestion, IDOT officials are encouraging motorists to take an alternate route. Local traffic can use Hudson Road or Cedar Heights Drive to avoid the construction zone. Through traffic may use U.S. Highway 218, U.S Highway 63 south of 218, or Hudson Road.
