Giddens Wins Iowa Senate Seat In Special Election

A member of the Cedar Falls School Board is going to the Iowa Senate.

Democrat Eric Giddens beat Republican Walt Rogers and Libertarian candidate Fred Perryman in Tuesday's special election to fill the open District 30 seat. Giddens won the race by a 56 percent-to-42 percent margin over Rogers. Perryman received just over one percent of the votes cast.

Unofficials results released by Black Hawk County election officials show that 7,610 ballots were cast in support of Giddens. Rogers garnered 5,631 votes and Perryman got 143. There were seven write-in ballots.

Giddens will replace Jeff Danielson, who vacated the seat last month. The Waterloo Democrat resigned on Feb. 14 to become a regional state policy director for the American Wind Energy Association, a national trade group for the wind energy industry.​

Iowa Senate District 30 includes Cedar Falls, Hudson and a small part of Waterloo.

The Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors must canvass the results before they become official.
