A Northeast Iowa woman is being charged with First Degree Murder, for the death last month of her infant child.

The case began on August 21st, when the Fayette County Sheriff's Office received a call from a home on Main Street in Elgin, reporting that a 5 week old infant was having trouble breathing.

The child was initially taken to Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, then air-cared to the American Children's Family Hospital, located at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison.

The infant, 5 week old Lydia Rios, died as a result of her injuries, 5 days later, on August 26th.

Following an investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff and Iowa DCI, authorities arrested 28 year old Alicia Rios of Elgin this morning (Friday, Sept. 28), charging her with one count of Murder in the First Degree, and Child Endangerment Causing Death.

Rios is currently being held in the Fayette County Jail in West Union, waiting for her initial court appearance.

If she is convicted, Rios could receive a sentence of life in prison, without parole.
