Authorities report that one person has died in an accident that closed down the Julien Dubuque Bridge, which connects Dubuque to Illinois, spanning the Mississippi River.

The crash happened shortly after 1am Wednesday (Nov. 28) on the Illinois side of the bridge.

According to the East Dubuque, Illinois Police Department, 37 year old Nathan Scott of Dubuque was driving across the bridge, when his vehicle broke down. Scott and his passenger were attempting to push the stalled vehicle off the bridge, when it was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by 27 year old Whitaker Ingles of Dyersville. The impact pushed Scott's car into a retaining wall on the bridge.

Scott's passenger, whose name has not yet been released, was killed in the accident.

Scott, Ingles and Ingles' passenger, 27 year old Sara Wells of Dubuque, were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

The bridge was closed for almost 8 hours, opening at about 9am Wednesday.

Scott is being charged with driving while his license is revoked.

The accident remains under investigation by the East Dubuque Police Department and Illinois State Police.

Another accident earlier this month on the bridge(November 15th) closed the structure for several hours. Multiple injuries were reported.

And back in April, the Julien Dubuque Bridge had to be closed when one person was killed in a two vehicle accident on the Illinois side of the bridge.
