The sheriff contacted the Oelwein Fire Department for assistance; once they arrived, a fireman was lowered into the well, and was able to get the dog into a portable kennel. The dog, which apparently was not injured, was then lifted to safety.

The owners of the property did not know who the dog belonged to, so it was taken to the Oelwein Veterinary Clinic to be housed.
