NEW HOPE, Minn. (AP) — Two police officers who were shot by a gunman inside a suburban Minneapolis city building are expected to recover.

Hennepin County sheriff's officials say two new officers were sworn in Monday during a city council meeting at New Hope City Hall.

The officers left the chambers as the meeting continued and encountered the man at about 7:15 p.m. Chief deputy Mike Carlson says the man opened fire and hit two officers. Authorities fatally shot the gunman.

Carlson said the officers are in good condition at a local hospital.
One of the officers was reportedly a former Mason City policeman. Their names have not been released.

Video of the meeting recorded the sound of gunshots outside the chambers. City Council member John Elder, a police officer, is seen shouting at those in the room to get down. He drew a handgun and pointed it at the doors.
