Dike-New Hartford enjoyed its opening match at the Iowa High School Girls State Volleyball Tournament in Cedar Rapids Wednesday morning (Nov. 9, 2016).

The second-ranked Wolverines (46-5), hoping to add another championship to their storied history, moved into the Class 3A semifinals with a 3-1 win over tournament newcomer North Polk at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. Dike-New Hartford dropped the first set before rallying to beat the 11th-rated Comets (37-10). Match scores were 23-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-22.

Junior Baylee Petersen led the Wolverines with 19 kills and also recorded 14 digs. Her twin sister, Sydney Petersen, topped the squad with 26 digs. They are the twin daughters of veteran UNI volleyball coach Bobbi Petersen.

Senior Madison Lavenz tallied 14 kills and had 15 digs. Junior setter Madison Hedges added 11 digs to the stat sheet.

Dike-New Hartford is making its 10th-straight appearance at state and 27th overall (3rd on Iowa's all-time list). A perennial Class 2A power, the Wolverines are attempting to join Mount Vernon as the only program in state history to win state championships in three different classes.

Next for Coach Diane Harms' team is a state semifinal match at 2 p.m. Thursday.
