With four weeks remaining in the Iowa high school football season, playoff races are starting to heat up. As usual, there's a full slate of games being played across the state on Friday night (Sept. 29, 2017).

The area schedule features a pivotal game between Aplington-Parkersburg (5-1, 2-1) and Roland-Story (3-2, 2-0) at Ed Thomas Field in Parkersburg. The two squads appear to be the top contenders for the district championship. A victory by Aplington-Parkersburg likely forces a four-way tie for first place in the seven-team group.

Another key game is Class-A District 4, featuring Wapsie Valley (5-0, 3-0) hosting Lisbon (4-1, 2-1). The fourth-ranked Warriors are the only unbeaten team in one of the state's strongest district. Lisbon is one of three teams with one loss. Wapsie Valley has already handed East Buchanan and Alburnett their only setbacks of the season. The Warriors would put themselves in the driver's seat for the district title with a win over the Lions this week.

It's Homecoming for several squads, including Cedar Falls (4-1, 1-0) and Oelwein. Cedar Falls is hosting Cedar Rapids Washington (3-2, 1-0) in a Class-4A, District 5 match-up at the UNI-Dome, while the Huskies (0-5, 0-3) entertain fourth-ranked Cascade (5-0, 3-0) in a Class-2A, District 4 contest.

Oelwein Dollars For Scholars is hosting a pre-game tailgate as part of the Huskies' Homecoming. An $8 meal will be served at the school's bus, starting at 4:30 p.m. The meal will feature rib-eye sandwiches, chips, dessert and beverage. All proceeds will go towards scholarship aid for this year’s graduating seniors.

For the second time this season, a depleted roster will keep Starmont off the field. Injuries have forced school administrators to forfeit the Stars' Homecoming game to Edgewood-Colesburg.
