Week two of the 2017 Iowa high school football season features a full schedule of games involving teams from the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa Friday night (Sept. 1).

Among the area games, there are a few marquee match-ups.

Two-time defending Class-A state champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck (1-0), which is ranked second, puts its 25-game wining streak on the line against perennial Class-2A power Dike-New New Hartford (1-1). Gladbrook-Reinbeck opened the season last week with a convincing 28-7 victory over Grundy Center (0-1) in the 98th consecutive and final meeting between the two rivals. Dike-New Hartford defeated Independence 47-20 on Aug. 18, then stumbled to a 39-6 setback against Class-1A third-ranked Denver (1-0) Friday night.

In another game involving two teams that are annually in the hunt for playoff berths, Waverly-Shell Rock (1-0) hosts North Fayette Valley (0-1) in Waverly. Neither team is ranked heading into the game, but both received enough votes in this week's Associated Press rankings to be considered among the top 10. Waverly-Shell Rock is coming off an impressive 55-0 season-opening victory over Crestwood, while TigerHawks fell to Decorah, 31-6.

West Delaware (1-0) is the only rated team from the area facing ranked opponent this week. The Hawks, ranked fifth in Class-3A, travel to Mount Vernon for a game against the Mustangs Friday night. Mount Vernon (1-0) is the ninth-rated team in Class-2A.

Another intriguing game is the one being played at Memorial Stadium in Waterloo. It's Homecoming for Waterloo East (1-0), which hosts the Newton Cardinals (1-0). The Trojans are coming off their first season-opening win since 2012. Last week's 38-0 win over Des Moines North snapped a 37-game losing streak and was East's first shutout victory since the 1990s.

For most teams, tonight's games are the final tune-up before the race for playoff berths begin.
