CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A 27-year-old woman is recovering at a hospital in Iowa City after surgeons removed a piece of pipe that impaled her during a traffic accident.

Authorities say the crash occurred a little before 12:10 a.m. Wednesday in Cedar Rapids as Kelsey Cummings was driving west on Zika Avenue. Police say Cummings' car crossed the center line and struck a gate. A 2-inch-wide piece of gate pipe rammed through the grill, radiator and firewall of her car and then pierced Cummings' pelvis, emerging in the back seat.

Police say emergency responders had to remove parts of her car so they could cut through the pipe on both sides of Cummings and free her. She was taken to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, where the pipe was removed.
