CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Cedar Rapids city worker has died after a fleeing suspect crashed into a van, and now the driver is facing charges. the chase happened Friday morning, but the city worker, 35-year-old Stephen Justin Cook, died Saturday at a hospital.

Police spokesman Greg Buelow says a 47-year-old Hiawatha man, Lawson Chadwick, has been charged with vehicular homicide and more charges may be added.

Chadwick sped away when an officer tried to pull him over. Six blocks later, his pickup truck smashed into the city van, belonging to the Cedar Rapids water department.

Chadwick had been arrested earlier in the week on a warrant for second-degree theft. He led officers on the high speed chase, after refusing to pull over on a traffic violation.
