Authorities have confiscated about 20 animals and filed charges against a Winneshiek County man, after finding numerous dead calves on his property.

On Tuesday (Oct. 3), the Winneshiek County Sheriff received a report of some neglected livestock on a farm west of Burr Oak. A search warrant was issued, and responding officers found 24 dead calves on the property.

20 other calves were seized, taken to a private feedlot, and placed under the care of a local veterinarian.

The owner, 51 year old Craig Underbakke of Decorah, was charged with Neglect of Livestock, which is a serious misdemeanor, and multiple counts of failure to dispose of dead calves, a simple misdemeanor.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff was assisted by the Winneshiek County Attorney and a local veterinarian.
