In conjunction with National Crime Victims' Rights Week, several area agencies are getting together to promote community safety.

The Waterloo Police Department and Allen Child Protection Center are hosting the Cedar Valley Family Safety Expo from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Monday, April 20, 2015). The free event is taking place at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex in downtown Waterloo.

More than 20 area agencies will be at the SportsPlex, giving out information on how to keep kids and families safe and how victims of crime can be supported by others in the community. The Family Safety Expo will also include giveaways and food. Attendees will have the chance to play soccer and basketball, and the play area inside the SportsPlex will be open for kids.

Drew and Heather Collins -- parents of 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins, one of the two Evansdale cousins who were kidnapped and murdered in July 2012 -- will be the keynote speakers. They will kick-off the event in the facility's courtyard.

To help keep children safe the Waterloo Police Department will distribute Child ID kits, with photograph, to parents who attend the event.

The Cedar Valley Family Safety Expo coincides with National Crime Victims' Rights Week, which runs April 19-25.
