Authorities are looking for the cause of a fire that did considerable damage to a home in Decorah.


Firefighters were called out at about 7:45pm Tuesday (Nov. 13), on the report of a house fire in the 2,000 block of Walnut Creek Road. The owner of the home stated that there was a fire in the basement, and the house was filling with smoke.

Responding Decorah Firefighters found heavy fire in the basement utility room, which spread in the ceiling space, then burned through to the first floor of the home.

It took fire crews about 3 hours to extinguish the blaze. There was significant damage to the basement utility room and the first floor of the home. No injuries were reported.

The origin of the fire remains under investigation.

The Decorah Fire Department was assisted by the Calmar Fire Department, Ridgeway Fire Department, Cresco Community Fire Department, Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance, Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office, and Winneshiek County Emergency Management
