Beef Products Incorporated will reopen its Garden City Kansas facility that was closed in 2012.  The facility will begin operating Monday and company officials plan to hire 40 to 50 full time employees.  The plant was one of three closed in March of 2012 when demand for lean finely textured beef slowed after media reports about the product. At the time, the Garden City plant employed 236 workers, according to Meatingplace.  The other two facilities closed in 2012, Amarillo Texas and Waterloo Iowa, will remain closed at this time.

The Garden City facility will collect beef trimmings to support the Tyson Foods production there and BPI’s Dakota City, Nebraska facility. Two shifts will operate for beef trimmings collection and a third shift will operate for cleaning.  BPI food quality and safety director Craig letch said “BPI continues to experience growth and remains confident this growth will continue. Although business conditions are not yet at the point where we can resume lean beef production operations in Garden City, this is certainly a step in the right direction.”
