The accident happened on Interstate 35. According to authorities, Hayes was a passenger in a minivan that had been disabled from a previous collision. Their van was then struck by a pickup.

Texas authorities report that several vehicles were involved, and at least five others were injured.

Three other occupants of the van, all from Northeast Iowa, were treated for injuries. They were identified as Hudson's father Dustin Hayes, his sister, 13 year old Emma Hayes, and Spencer Gull of Garnavillo.
