The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating an incident in which a man was injured in a fall from a steep bluff at a popular Northeast Iowa park.


It happened at about 3:30pm Saturday afternoon (June 3) at the Mines of Spain Recreation Area, south of Dubuque.

23 year old Andrew Freibeurge of Dubuque fell about 40 to 50 feet off Horseshoe Bluff. Freibeurge and two of his companions were hiking off of the designated path at the time, which is closed to recreational hikers.

According to authorities, alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

Freibeurge was taken to a local hospital for treatment. There was no word on his condition, or the extent of his injuries.
