A truck driver hauling hogs in Fayette County faces charges following an accident in which numerous animals were killed.


Shortly after 1pm Monday (Aug. 6), the Fayette County Sheriff was alerted of a semi tractor trailer, pulling a load of hogs, tipped over in the ditch on "U" Avenue, 4 miles southeast of Waucoma.

28 year old Levi Byler of Stewartville, Minnesota, was driving a 2015 Kenworth pulling a 2012 livestock trailer, when he became distracted and lost control. The semi and trailer went into the ditch, rolling onto it's side.

Byler was not hurt, but over 30 hogs died in the crash, plus there was $20,000 damage to the semi and trailer, owned by Livestock Express Inc. of Waucoma .

Byler was charged with Failure to Maintain Control.

The Fayette County Sheriff was assisted by Iowa DOT Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and Waucoma Fire Department.
