A big shake up in the Class-A rankings highlights this week’s Iowa high school football poll, released by the Associated Press on Monday (Oct. 9, 2017).

The juggling among the top 10 was the result of top-ranked Council Bluffs St. Albert and No. 2 Gladbrook-Reinbeck — both playing at home — suffering their first losses of the season over the weekend.

St. Albert fell to ninth-ranked Southwest Valley of Corning, 8-7, on a rain-soaked and muddy field Friday night. The Timberwolves (7-0) scored with 6.9 seconds remaining and converted the two-point play. They jumped to No. 2 in the rankings following the win, while the Falcons (6-1) dropped to No. 7.

Two-time defending state champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck had its 29-game winning streak snapped by No. 6 Hudson in a lightning-postponed game that was played in pouring rain late Saturday afternoon. Hudson kicked a field goal on the final play of the first half and recorded a safety with just under two minutes to play to beat the Rebels 5-0 in the slop at the “The Pit” in Gladbrook. The Pirates (7-0) jumped to No. 3 in the poll after the victory, while Gladbrook-Reinbeck (6-1) fell to No. 8.

Also featured in the Class-A poll are Wapsie Valley and East Buchanan (6-1), which kept a hold on its No. 10 ranking. The Warriors (7-0) dropped one spot from No. 4 to No. 5, despite Friday night’s 34-0 shutout of Starmont.

The week’s survey also produced an oddity. Waukon and La Porte City Union — ranked No. 8 and 10, respectively, last week — swapped positions in the Class-2A rankings, even after the higher-rated Indians beat the Knights 50-35.

In all, 11 teams from the Cedar Valley and northeast Iowa are featured in this week’s poll.
